Opting In or Out

The APRS/SMS Gateway is intended to allow amateur radio operators (HAM) to exchange text messages with SMS (text messaging) on cellular phones. In order to comply with regulations, users receiving messages from users of this service must first opt-in to receiving messages.

Opting Out

You can opt out of receiving messages in any of the following ways:

If you do not respond, or respond NO to the confirmation messages, that user will not be able to send you messages
If you respond with the STOP <callsign> (Ex: STOP VE3JBD), that user will no longer be able to send you messages
If your respond with STOP ALL, no users will be able to send you messages, and the system will not send you confirmation messages when users try the first time.
If you are a user, and do not want to receive messages from other users, you can opt-out by updating your user profile.

Opting In

An individual can opt-in using the following methods:

First Message

The first time a user attempts to send a message to a number, the recipient will receive a message identifying the user sending the message and asking them to accept receiving these messages. Example:

The APRS/SMS Gateway Association service, for John Doe (VE3JBD), wants to send you messages. Respond Yes to accept. You can also stop receiving from this user at any time by responding with STOP VE3JBD or from all users by responding with STOP ALL. Visit https://smsgte.org/opt-in to learn more.

If the recipient responds Yes, they will receive the message sent, and subsequent messages from that user, or subsequent messages

Enable All

If a recipient wishes to enable receiving messages from any APRS user, they can do so by responding with ENABLE. Any message sent by the service on behalf of any user will be permitted.

User Opt-in

Users may opt-in to receive messages from the service when they subscribe to use the service, or by updating their user profile.

This Website

Enter a user’s callsign and your phone number below. You will receive a confirmation message, as described above to confirm.

Finally got APRS set up the way I want in my Jeep. Sometimes I head out alone. Since proof of concept testing of SMSGTE, where I contacted my wife well into the back country above Montezuma, CO and she replied, I feel much safer being out on my own.

This summer I was camping in a deep Rocky Mountain valley, on the east side of a mountain where a digipeater/repeater site sits facing the city to the west. There is no cell service for a couple miles unless you can climb to a nearby peak. While I could barely hear the repeater in the valley, I could not send with enough power to do more than break the squelch on the repeater. Trying APRS I found I was receiving packets, and if I sent with 25w I could be heard! I didn't have any particular need for it, but I used SMSGTE to chat with my brother for a little bit. It was a comfort knowing that should there be a need I could get communication out of the otherwise completely RF dead valley!
