There has been a flurry of interest lately in setting up remote modems in countries where using our existing SMS service provider is currently too expensive.
If you are interested in establishing a remote gateway in your country, the requirements are as follows:
- A Windows PC (It has been tested on Windows 7 through Windows 10 and should work on most Windows servers)
- A static IP address or DNS address that can be reached from the Internet (Dynamic DNS is fine)
- If the PC is behind a firewall with NAT (network address translation), you will need to configure port forwarding for the PC
- GSM modem with a SIM card
Selecting a Modem
Most GSM modems use the same AT commands, so if you already have one, it’s worth trying it before buying another. Hopefully the one you have is compatible and we can add it to the compatibility list. Most of the portable wifi routers don’t support AT commands. Some of them do, but require some work to enable them, and I haven’t had the opportunity to test with any of them.

The following modems are known to be compatible with the remote modem software. Please, note some of these modems are sold under a carrier’s brand, and it may not be obvious who the manufacturer is.
