The Kenwood TM-D710 is a 144/430 MHz dual band FM mobile transceiver. The older TM-D710A relies on external GPS while the newer TM-D710GA includes an integrated GPS receiver and supports APRS functionality at both 1200 and 9600 bps. It features built-in Digipeater functionality, cross-band repeater and a maximum RF output of 50W.
Sending a Message
- From the main screen, press the KEY soft key to toggle between voice and APRS functions.
- Press the MSG key to show the message list
- To compose a new message, press NEW
- Enter SMSGTE as the destination callsign then press Enter
- Enter the @ symbol (press # then * on the microphone keypad) followed by the destination number then add a single space (0 key)
- Enter the message you wish to send
- Press Enter to transmit the button
Receiving a Message
When a message is received from SMSGTE, in can be viewed from the message list. To view the message, use the following steps:
- From the main screen, press the KEY soft key to toggle between voice and APRS functions.
- Press the MSG key to show the message list
- Use the selection knob to scroll through the messages
- Select the message to read by pressing Enter
- If you wish to reply to the message, press REPLY
- Follow the Sending starting at step 6.
Notes
- On the TM-D710, the Select button is activated by pushing in the control knob on the left hand side of the radio.
- You can store commonly used text, such as phone numbers, aliases or messages in memory and recall them when composing messages.
- You can enter text using the number keys on the microphone using T9 style entry (like an older cell phone). It isn’t necessary to toggle through letters using the control knob.
